So if I don't need a transparency in my banner do you recommend using jpg instead?

Because I have always used png regarding if images have transparent backgrounds.
Can I see your banner, Sama34?
I'd recommend you to use PNG as thats what I use on my all forums.

There are actually like 6 banners...

I use png to have better quality, but as you can see one of my banner size is around 350kb and I use different banner for like 5 different subforums, so...
PNG for those.

GIF does support transparency, actually.....

In order of speed:
Gif is fastest
Jpg
Png

In order of quality:
Png
Jpg
Gif
...hey! I have hit jackpot here Smile thanks for all those answers, I shall be going for PNG...if I could only give all of you +1 rep Smile

...marking this as solved, though discussions here are becoming quite interesting particularly the transparency ability for PNG, I didn't know that..can someone insert an answer how I can make my PNG banner transparent? thanks... +1 rep to all
In a decent photo editing software (e.g. Adobe Photoshop, The GIMP) you would just delete the background. Do you really need the transparency though? Transparency increases the image size significantly, so you should think about that. Smile
Solidus, I've always had smaller PNG images than their JPG counterparts. I don't know, maybe you're doing something as they come out of the editor, but it's always been smaller for me, and then I make them even smaller by using http://smush.it

And unless your computer is slow, there's no difference between PNG and JPG loading time, if they're both the same size file.
