Linux is a platform, MyBB is a product. There is a difference and the conclusion is that having different distributions of MyBB developed by different teams will create a disjointed experience and will be a nightmare to support. You'll have problems with consistency and development quality which will ultimately end up with a lesser product.

Even though I want more social features I believe MyBB should focus on their core product. They are a small, young team working on a product for free. They should focus on the foundation. Let plugin developers do the rest.
