I haven't had any problem whatsoever with 1.6.4 on a live site. I've actually tried it with two different forums, and they're both running fine.
Do you use Google SEO plugin on your forums? If yes, does it work?
No, I don't. I use my own SEO plugins, although none of them affect URLS.
If you manually apply the changes that are specified in the readme, I'm sure it will work perfectly.
There are no patches that we can give you. The changes are far too widespread - they don't just change forumdisplay but they affect other files too.
