A VPS will do fine for most sites, besides, dedicated servers are usually a LOT more expensive than VPS's, since with a dedicated server, it's your server, no one elses.
I recommend ShockingHost, they provide cheap, good quality VPS (and dedicated, open a ticket for info of dedicated servers) packages. I have a VPS with them, and haven't looked back once, their support is amazing. It's owned by a former staff member of MyBB (Conor Calby).
You can see some reviews of them here:

Their VPS packages are located here:

What about A2 and Hostgator?
I looked ShockingHost but honestly does not give me this feeling of security that gives me Hostgator and A2 (where I have already Domains and services). In particular, the features of the VPS does not seem clear:
-wich CPU have the server?
-wich control method have the server? i like work with Cpanel for example
-wich other info have the server?
The price is for sure cool cause, with 25$ i bought one VPS that is the same or near to hostgator lvel 6 vps offer but hostgator cost 119$/month and shockinghost cost 25/month. But is not transparent the other specification of the server and I will not buy a service with eyes closed!
You might even do better using shared hosting elsewhere.
Hostgator is one of those bad shared hosting, very restricted, overload clients on the servers.
Any shared hosting selling "Unlimited" of anything, avoid.

CPU of the node is dual quad core (8 cores @ 2.4GHz)
The VPS is all managed via the SOlusVM control panel. cPanel is for managing shared and reseller accounts not VPS. cPanel will be instaleld by our staff for free if its purchased during signup

Any other info you need, I recommend you open a ticket with us, or PM me.
Thanks for the review to Morsecode.
I just like to say, even if you don't go with ShockingHost do NOT go with a big webhost. They oversell big time, and besides, how can a webhost with 20,000 clients or more provide good support? How can they interact with their clients and know what their clients want?
If you can afford it, i would go for cloudhosting from
http://stormondemand.com
It's a little more expensive than most hosts, but their support is the best in the business.
The advantages are that you can upscale your server with a few clicks, loadbalancers, extra servers, etc. when needed. (And downscale when no longer needed, and only pay for that extra power per hour.)
I wouldn't really go for a VPS. For a good VPS you can also have the smallest cloud..
+ A big growing forum on a VPS you have to move soon to a Dedi or cloud anyways..
Scrap everything you have heard so far.
See
This forum? it is on an advanced shared package from hawkhost.com
