At the moment I use 1816 but I want to upgrade to the 1817 pre-release version, because of the known problems in 1816.

Do I need to run the upgrade-script or can I just overwrite the old files with the changed files from 1817?

You will need to run the upgrade script. The changed files should also include an upgrade script within the package.

Thanks Wires, in that case I will wait untill the 1817 version gets released officially......

You can go to this THREAD and read more about this.

To my knowledge, it's always necessary to run the Upgrade script (upgrade.php) unless otherwise noted in the instructions in the Release.
