Does MyBB automatically change a potential spam registration to Banned?

I've had a few registrations that have the user in the Banned group.

If so, I'm wondering if somehow the software could just somehow deny them a registration instead?

Just had this happen again today.....a user logged in and somehow got changed to the group BANNED.

Do spam bots trigger something for this to happen within the forum software?

Only plugin I have is Akismet. That wouldnt cause someone to be able to register, login, then 5 minutes later go from the Registered group to the Banned Group automatically.

I am very happy this is happening but want to know why and how. Legitimate registrations still seem to be getting through just fine but I dont want actual people getting placed in the Banned group.
