I don't think that's a good solution. The people who have the money will get all the "premium goodies" while the less fortunate people have to get the "stripped down" version.

That's what I like about the free forums so much, they never will trick you into buying extra stuff. You can be sure that everything that has to do with your forum software is free.

I don't mind making a nice donation when I'm using MyBB on a big website, no problemo. But I don't like the idea of "premium addons" which will divide the community.

Sorry, that is not true at all, vBulletin charges extra on top of their full featured forum for the blogging plug in, you also have to buy a license from vBAdvanced to add a directory to your forum.

There is no such "divided community" there and there is nothing wrong with "selling premium products and hacks" to MyBB users if they integrate with the forum and are supported by professional developers who need to pay their bills too!

You have to pay for VBB and it still has a link down the bottom (Atlest the ones i have seen). Though i suppos it does help the mybb creators recover some costs.

if a hacker knows your boards php then its far more likley that you will suffer a malicious attack. think, if a hacker finds a weekness all the have to do is google search "powered by mybb" and they can hack every mybb forum on the whole web in 10 minutes using a bot.

That's not true. If your board is open source, people will be able to find the exploits sooner versus later. I.e. the reason Microsoft STILL has security problems up to this date is because they're code is proprietary. Surely many many many exploits would have been reported and fixed way sooner if Microsoft's code was open source.
In addition when security updates are available, for any script even Word Press you have to get your updates installed to be safe, all CMS scripts have problems with holes, it is mostly those who never bother to update that have their sites hacked.
Just a note, there's nothing preventing modders to release modification, plugins, or themes with a paid fee. i.e. someone could create a multi-MyBB script, and sell it for $10, if they so want to--there's nothing preventing that.
I love it when i see myBB at the bottom of peoples forums, To me its shows a sign of quality..... Smile
