Are you able to reproduce this issue on a clean MyBB 1.8.8 installation with the latest plugin version?

It could make a decent addition, although if the service isn't providing HTTPS URLs by default it usually means they aren't done with the configuration yet (once it's done the administrator's task would be limited to updating URLs with REGEXP_REPLACE or custom script so they don't have to be rewritten every time).

I was leaning more toward users that use services like Imgur and end up copy/pasting a http link instead of https because Imgur doesn't force https.
