Hmm... yea... read my post #1. I was the one that originally started this thread.
sure.
after the last update i fear doing upgrades b4 hearing others
Yes, download the Changed Files.
Make sure you run the UPGRADE.PHP script. Read the instructions carefully!!
If you fail to do this, then you will have problems.
i always run it like
my site name/install
by deleting the lock file that is in install file.
and installing the upgrade like this always.
is it something new that wasn't before?

The procedure has not changed. When you upload all the changed files (if migrating from 1.8.16) or the whole file list (if migrating from 1.8.15 or below), delete install/lock and proceed by reading the on-screen instructions as they come.

Do note that if you are using a custom theme, you will also need to check the changes made in templates which are not applied automatically to custom themes. 1.8.16 introduced some crucial security fixes which needed edits to certain templates, resulting in many (duplicate) support requests.

Prior to the upgrade, you can delete the entire /install folder.
It's not needed after the Upgrade is completed.
1. Delete the /install folder
2. Upload all of the changed files into their respective folders including the ones that go into the /root folder. Some websites have /public_html as their root, which is what I have for mine.
3. Go to your browser and input your website URL with the /install/upgrade.php like this: http(s)://yourwebsite.com(net)/install/upgrade.php
4. When you see the Upgrade window, follow all prompts, then the upgrade should be completed.
That's it. Not hard, but you have to do it the right way.

You still have to apply the changes manually to your custom theme.
MyBB 1.8.17 does NOT automatically fix the login postkey issue when using a custom theme.
Edit: In fact, you’re free to PM access to your cPanel so I can upgrade your forum and then apply the correct changes.
Plugin Count: I lost count.
Public Plugins are available here.
Please do not PM me for support unless asked to.
