I don't use anti-virus. I do, however, reinstall every few months. As my SSD fills.

The company I work for are re-sellers of both ESET and MalwareBytes. I've tested their entire product range, alternating each one every few months when I'm bored.
I'm not a particularly unsafe web browser however, so the effects were negligible.
I'd recommend novice users and people who download a lot of torrents to use something more advanced such as HitmanPro.Alert - it's got some fairly aggressive experimental heuristics and scantime features.

Bitdefender Free Antivirus along side of MalwayreBytes Premium (on some of my machines, others I just run Bitdefender Free SOLO).

I had previously in old days used all of the AV's mentioned in the vote poll (few missing). My best experience is with AVG
AVG does have inbuilt firewall but i never installed that module because its way too resource hungry

You should lower your expectations, perhaps a Debian installation might help.
