Back to life
I don't use anti-virus. I do, however, reinstall every few months. As my SSD fills.
The company I work for are re-sellers of both ESET and MalwareBytes. I've tested their entire product range, alternating each one every few months when I'm bored.

I'm not a particularly unsafe web browser however, so the effects were negligible.

I'd recommend novice users and people who download a lot of torrents to use something more advanced such as HitmanPro.Alert - it's got some fairly aggressive experimental heuristics and scantime features.
Bitdefender Free Antivirus along side of MalwayreBytes Premium (on some of my machines, others I just run Bitdefender Free SOLO).
AVG Smile paid one.
Mbam Smile Paid one.
Panda Firewall Smile Free
Windows Defender Smile Free

Note:
I had previously in old days used all of the AV's mentioned in the vote poll (few missing). My best experience is with AVG

AVG does have inbuilt firewall but i never installed that module because its way too resource hungry

You should lower your expectations, perhaps a Debian installation might help.

Better than RHEL/CentOS.
