i`ve used free forums where like icyboards and free self hosting but you cant beat goin for paid hosting,
you`ve got total control over the site that way and not having access to the server is not good as you cant add all the plugins you want.
i think if you want your forum to succeed just do it right with a paid hosting package it dont cost alot at all.
i learned the hard way i started on forumation with is a free forum that host it so no database access or access to the server its on i used it for a month but i couldnt add things i wanted and it was just impossible to have paid subscriptions as there was nothing installed for it and when i come to move to mybb i had to get all my members to sign up again and lost all my posts as they wouldnt give me a database backup and they wouldnt let me transfer my .com domain that i brought with them untill id had it 3 months so i had to buy the .co.uk to use untill i got it (i now use both .com & .co.uk)

Yes for people who cant afford hosting this is great but like Craig said you cant beat paid hosting

Thats true. One thing I didn't like they don't provide FTP access (same as other similars).
But they have introduced a custom scripted image uploading for themes from within ACP which is, I think, a good feature among free forum hosting providers.
True I mean I have nothing bad to say about them I just prefer paid hosting that's all
