Since I'm not toooo technical I eventually went with GoMobile. I guess that a responsive theme would be better for tablets and phones, but GoMobile does the job in a basic way. Hopefully it will live on with 1.8.

Now I'm holding on for MyBB 2.0 and a responsive / mobile friendly design, or some other suggestion....

Using responsive theme just for tablet / smartphones isn't a great solution. Responsive approach is aimed to replace a separate design that is tailored for tablets / smartphones.
