so, any way to hack it to add on/off states?

I fixed that problem with forum read status and made a pull request on Github.

Yes, reas/unread status works now for setted forum icons.

There is an input box for forum icons by plugin defaults....

For me not... at least for my icon set. I use dark one color icons... maybe it is the issue. I will try to find it out : anyway thank you!

The changes aren't merged yet. Please try the attached plugin file.

@SvePu - I tried your github version and also this php file... no opacity is applied

EDIT: OK, I have found a problem

{$forumicon_css} was missing in headerinclude template after activation of plugin. I added it manually and now it works fine! Thank you
