After renaming the htaccess I now got an error 500 on my site.
Post what you have in your .htaccess now?
This is what I have:

# EXAMPLE .htaccess FOR MYBB WITH GOOGLE SEO URL
# -------------------------------------------------------------------
# This file is identical to MyBB's htaccess.txt example file,
# with rewrite rules for a standard Google SEO install added.
#
# Before using this file please make sure to:
#
# - replace /MyBB/ with your forum folder, e.g. / or /forum/
# - replace yoursite/MyBB with your forum URL
# - name the file '.htaccess' (starting with the dot, no .txt)
#
# Alternatively you can add the required rewrite rules to your
# existing .htaccess, the specific rules required will be displayed
# on the plugin status page once Google SEO URL is enabled.

There is an easy way to do this with "Custom Error pages" to my way of thinking. Why not just install the mod called Page Manager, create some error pages with it, then link to them in your .htaccess file.

That mod will even show people browsing your error pages in Who's Online.
Because I'll use some other features of Google SEO which have the same problem as 404.
have you enabled it in the settings, kinda obvious i know but just can't see why else it won't work
Yes, it is enabled.
Just something I wanted to touch on here regarding Server Error pages. If you use cPanel and notice it's configured to serve custom Error pages as (.shtml) files. Really, your better off sticking with that format I'd say.

My cPanel gives me the option to create custom SHTML error pages for using, and I've noticed if I create a 404.shtml page using my text editor, then save and upload that 404.shtml file to my server. The code for that page is also listed in cPanel under (Error Pages) as well automatically, even though I didn't directly add the code there using cPanel to create that custom error page. But if I create let's say a 404.php error page, it's not grabbed into cpanel, so I think your best off sticking with the format your server is configured to serve error pages as. Which in my case is .shtml files to make sure all works perfect with them.

Have a read of this link: http://25yearsofprogramming.com/blog/20071009.htm
If i disable my 404 and try to visit an invalid url i just get a white page so all i can think is its to do with your .htaccess file.
