To fix the tab issue, you need to follow this post and change all the passing of variable to passing them by reference (ie: &$somevar) and adding returns.

I also had issues with guests still being able to post right away and I went and altered these three tables to get it to work:
usergroups
forumpermissions
datacache

Everything then worked fine for me with these changes. I'd love to see the author fix it in the download though.

for example: forum "test" is only visible if the user is in group "a" and "b" and "c"
