Right now a standard VPS will be cheaper to get for the most part even with a backup plan on top of it.

For VPS providers I would recommend the following:
http://serverdragon.com/
http://6sync.com
http://www.linode.com/index.cfm
I think that I might go with 6sync.com

After reviewing some of the suggestions, I just have no urge to continue past them. They seem to know what they're doing, especially in their ability to sell themselves.

How many users do you think the 2 cpu / 512 mb VPS would be able to handle concurrently??

1,000 users?? Or is that too much?

If the VPS is yours (you bought) then you can set any limits, its called 'max_user_connections'. =)

1,000 users at once would require a dedicated I would imagine.
Seriously??

What type of limits could one expect with MyBB on a 2 cpu / 512 mb VPS host?? .... and a dedicated host??

few to several hundred for VPS & 1,000 users on a dedicated host?
The server hosting the MySQL database would take up the most resources with 1000 concurrent users.

Each user would make on average 3 queries/second, so you'd have 3000 queries/second or 180,000 per minute.

Also it would depend on the spec of the "dedicated host". If the dedicated is of the same spec as the VPS, it would provide almost exactly the same performance.
Hey,
I use Godaddy. Not had any issue with them. They have been great.

Wait a little.
If you are looking for VPS's, i use JCDK VPS's, very nice.

Dedicated resources > shared resources
Dedicated 1.6GHz Intel Atom > Shared 3.0GHz Intel Xeon

Both my main sites are hosted at ASO: www.puppylinuxfaq.org and www.puppylinuxforum.org (forum under construction at this writing). I also setup a test forum at 000webhost as a guinea pig. If I lobotomize it I won’t take down my main site.

@All
I think it’s worth compromising on bandwidth and space in exchange for top-flight support, especially since unlimited anything is a fantasy (YMMV).

ASO support is second to none. If they can support me they likely can support anybody! Trust me on this, any hosting, no matter what the price is worthless without top-notch support.

EDIT: When I say “ASO support is second to none. If they can support me they likely can support anybody!” I mean I’m difficult to support both in regard to the difficulty of the issues I need support with and in terms of my personality. When it comes to paid hosting (or paid anything) I tend to be neither patient or understanding when dealing with host problems. I expect my problems to be fixed 10 minutes ago. It’s one thing to support someone who’s calm cool and collected, it’s another thing altogether when they’re screaming because a mission critical issue has reared it’s ugly head. Under those conditions many (most?) hosts will either blow you off or cancel you. ASO has ALWAYS been tolerant and helpful with every problem I've ever asked them about. They've never failed to fix an issue either. They never give up no matter what the problem. I can honestly characterize their patience as "saintly".

PS: VPS is too rich for my blood. But my sites don’t bring in any cash either, at least not until I put up a donate button, get a sponsor or something like that (I don't like ads).
A Small Orange is great Smile I actually recommended them to Jordan, though I've never had any personal use. Seeing how quick Jordan's site runs, I'd certainly recommend them again.

I'd also recommend Immediate VPS for those looking for a VPS. I pay around £3 a month for 512mb RAM with a 1GB burst and it's been really nice so far.
