And considering HF is probably a top 10 active forum online. I don't think MyBB has any problems. HF does 25k posts per day and a million daily page views.
VB is considered the defacto commercial product but I believe that's because with the price you get commercial support.
But let's compare HF to top forums software.
#1 as MyBB
#1 against any SMF
#2 against any PHPBB
#5 against any IPB
So tell your friend that not only is it possible that a MyBB forum can be just as scalable as any other forum software but that it's a reality. And I know that MyBB has concerns about large forum performance as many other MyBB forums are growing into the hundreds of thousands of posts.
And considering HF is probably a top 10 active forum online. I don't think MyBB has any problems. HF does 25k posts per day and a million daily page views.

I believe that all the widely used forum software today will be able to handle large forums. As far as successful, I believe that's on an individual basis. It's all about the people behind it...
