Yaaay. so MyBB 1.8.0 has been officially released few hours ago today! I can't express how much happy I am at the moment.
Anyway, I'm now waiting for 1.8.1 minor release is being released since it will fix many issues!

Am I safe to use the PHP 5.6 branch or should I set it to anything lower?

We haven't tested MyBB with PHP 5.6 yet (afaik) but from the changelog it should work.
