- You don't have to deactivate the plugin.
- You can upload only the main file ("inc/plugins/thx.php").

Can you tell me what each of the below does?

The wording is a little confusing.

The first one, calculate the total number of given/received thanks for each user and each post.
The second one, calculate the total number of thanked posts of each user.

They've been separated based on a technical difference which would help you keep the load of server low during the update process. But you probably have to use both of them.
