Hello, my name is Isabel and I am simply inquiring about features of myBB.

I am part of a small female gaming group formerly known as Feminine Divinity and we are leaving our free hosted Proboards forum located here in search of something new, more powerful, and more customizable.

Due to word of mouth, I downloaded and installed SMF software into our database and have begun to set that system up (even now).

But I guess a part of me is still seeking something else because something lead me to search for "top free forum of 2010" and I ran into a poll which had myBB with a whooping 1,122 votes. The next closest was (you guessed it) SMF with a measly 392 votes in comparison.

Reading through all the my silly "my -insert male member here- is better than your ...." I actually stumbled upon some good constructive remarks about the pros and cons between the two most popular forums.

So I figured I'd drop by and ask a few questions regarding features to anyone that cares to take the time to answer them. I do request that this thread doesn't turn into another silly fest like that poll was.

Anyway! Here are some things I am looking for.

Does myBB offer:
  • Different member groups and the ability to change the color of the names of personnel in those member groups?
    -What about the name in a post?
    -What about the name on a profile?
    -What about the name on the "Users online" listing?

  • Different member groups and the ability to change the post background of their post?

  • BBC support for video embeds such as YouTube?
    -Any other formats such as MySpace, Facebook, Metacafe, etc...?

  • A dev tracker type system?

  • The ability to display the posters information vetically rather than horizontally?

  • The ability to incorporate portals to show small tables along the sides of your forum such as "Top 10 posters" or "Recent posts/Polls"?

  • A reward system which allows the admin (or anyone with permission) to award users via a small "Awards" display on their posts and profile for various admin defined achievements?

  • The ability to IP lookup and see who is online as well as what that user is currently doing such as "Isabel is currently viewing "Whose online"?

  • Integrated chat system?
    -What about a buddy system?

  • Forum profile customizable fields and the ability for members to upload pictures and set various parameters for their forum profile?

  • An incorporated Gallery or Media type function?
    -What about for affiliates?
    -What about for downloads?

  • An interactive Arcade system which records stats and high scores of members and allows for the setup of tournaments between your members?

  • The ability to incorporate different smiley sets such as those from Yahoo! chat?

  • The ability to login through social networks such as Facebook or MySpace?

  • A spell checker?

I realized this list was going on and on so I'll stop here. Any feedback would be appreciated and thank you very much for your time.

Sincerely,
Isa

All the above is included in the core product.

You'd probably need a plugin for that, I'm not sure if one exists yet or not but it would be fairly simple anyway.

(2010-11-08, 11:19 AM)Isabel Wrote: [ -> ]BBC support for video embeds such as YouTube?
-Any other formats such as MySpace, Facebook, Metacafe, etc...?

YouTube and a few others are a core feature - click the little TV on the right of the post editor. There's a plugin for a long list of others - http://community.mybb.com/thread-55969.html

(2010-11-08, 11:19 AM)Isabel Wrote: [ -> ]The ability to display the posters information vetically rather than horizontally?

That's a core feature too, that can be changed in the ACP and users can also change it individually in their User CP.

(2010-11-08, 11:19 AM)Isabel Wrote: [ -> ]The ability to incorporate portals to show small tables along the sides of your forum such as "Top 10 posters" or "Recent posts/Polls"?

There are a number of plugins that can do that, this being one of the best - http://mods.mybb.com/view/prostats

(2010-11-08, 11:19 AM)Isabel Wrote: [ -> ]A reward system which allows the admin (or anyone with permission) to award users via a small "Awards" display on their posts and profile for various admin defined achievements?

There's a few plugins for that too - http://www.mybbextras.com/showthread.php?tid=405 - http://www.mybbcentral.com/thread-1782.html

(2010-11-08, 11:19 AM)Isabel Wrote: [ -> ]The ability to IP lookup and see who is online as well as what that user is currently doing such as "Isabel is currently viewing "Whose online"?

That's shown on the Who's Online list and in member profiles.

(2010-11-08, 11:19 AM)Isabel Wrote: [ -> ]Integrated chat system?
-What about a buddy system?

There's a core buddy system that can be extended with plugins. There are integrated chat plugins and tutorials.

(2010-11-08, 11:19 AM)Isabel Wrote: [ -> ]Forum profile customizable fields and the ability for members to upload pictures and set various parameters for their forum profile?

You can setup custom profile fields in the ACP and there's a profile picture plugin.

(2010-11-08, 11:19 AM)Isabel Wrote: [ -> ]An incorporated Gallery or Media type function?

Again, there are a few gallery plugins but I personally prefer bridging with Coppermine - http://petforums.biz/gallery/index.php

(2010-11-08, 11:19 AM)Isabel Wrote: [ -> ]The ability to incorporate different smiley sets such as those from Yahoo! chat?

You can use whatever smilie sets you like, they can be changed in the ACP.

(2010-11-08, 11:19 AM)Isabel Wrote: [ -> ]The ability to login through social networks such as Facebook or MySpace?

There are numerous plugins for Facebook like, tweet this, etc. There's also a Facebook Connect plugin - http://mybbaddons.com/board/thread-1306.html

Wow, that all sounds great and I was amazed at how much of the stuff was already a part of the core package. Thanks so much for the great and help response.

The author is currently working on a version 1.6 compatible one,

(2010-11-08, 11:19 AM)Isabel Wrote: [ -> ]-What about for affiliates?
-What about for downloads?

Affiliates can be placed in Portal, Index, & or Footer Templates.

It's all HTML, so if you have a basic understanding or can learn it, it's not that difficult.

And with Downloads, you can probably put up your own downloads.php page
First, create the downloads.php in Notepad or something and put this code in:
<?php

define("IN_MYBB", 1);
define("KILL_GLOBALS", 1);
require "global.php";

add_breadcrumb("Downloads", "downloads.php");

eval("\$downloads= \"".$templates->get("downloads")."\";");
output_page($downloads);
?>

Then under the Global Templates, create a new one & called it: downloads, and place this code in:
<html>
<head>
{$headerinclude}
</head>
<body>
{$header}
<table border="0" cellspacing="{$theme['borderwidth']}" cellpadding="{$theme['tablespace']}" class="tborder">
<tr>
<td class="thead">Downloads</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="trow1">
//Your text & downloads
Downloads Coming Soon.

</td>
</tr>
</table>
{$footer}
</body>
</html>

Just edit the code with your downloads links, and keep updating it via Templates > Global > Downloads.
one more reason why you must prefer mybb "the user interface" (yeah, i know it can be customized, but still.. smf makes me puke Toungue)
lol Now I want to install SMF just for fun and see how their Admin Panel looks like.

Alright, I'm gonna do that!
