On the top side of things, it may look like MyBB is fine and dandy. However looking at the code, parts of it dates back to 2004, and even earlier than that. It's old, it's ugly, it's had its time back in the days of PHP 3 and 4.
The $mybb "core" was written in 2005 if I recall correctly, and it sometimes causes integration issues because many things in MyBB rely on global variables. By rewriting everything, we are aiming to set up a flexible and extensible "base" that we can use through the next several years.
I don't see why the don't just scrap 1.6 and go ahead onto 2.0 I mean this system is getting old now, and I am now bored of looking at the same thing...
2.0 will take time and people are impatient enough when it comes to new releases.
I can't even imagine all the work that's being put into 2.0... o.O

There's already enough hype for 1.6, let alone 2.0 - since many things will change in 2.0; which I won't go into specifics about. Plus, it would look odd having 0.X, 1.X, 1.2.X, 1.4.X, 2.0.. It would also make a mockery of the "schema" that the developers follow.
