ok, I have uploaded the old version I was running from my PC, i had done the updates from my laptop so I am now back to square 1, I will try uploading the files again (not inc/settings.php, inc/config.php and install folder and see how things go)
I have no idea what I am doing wrong but it is still saying I am on version 1.03
The version number is stored in the file inc/functions.php. So there seems to be something wrong with the upload of the new files.
any suggestion as to what to do next?

Re-upload the files.
Switch your ftp upload utility to automatic transfer instead of binary transfer, and make sure to click overwrite all and not overwrite all older.
I am just going to give up, it still hasnt updated
ok if all else fails.
see if you can get your hands on total commander, its what i use for ftp
