Your fix does not fix the issue at all, so I think you need to test your patch before telling everyone it works, I am no coding noob or server noob and its still broke with your patch, it still has no options under settings.

If the patch doesn't work, maybe you need to ask your server manager to upgrade to PHP 5.3 or higher.

PHP 5.2 is outdated and is not supported anymore. So count that patch just as a favor!
I don't have that version on my debug server so I couldn't test it but logically it would work though as I told before I wouldn't bother myself giving medicine to the dead. The real fix would be upgrading PHP to the latest stable version.

If by "section" you mean "Extra Cell" (those blocks that show "thanks", "last members", etc.) I would say yes! Take a look at this page and you'll see a screenshot that shows the options for Extra Cells:

To hide an Extra Cell, you just need to set it to show nothing ("---").
But if "section" means category or forum, you'll need to use the "Ignore list" option for that purpose.

I've tested both 1.7.6 (wich I'm using) and 1.9.3 / 1.9.3 with patch, and none of them worked
