Has there been a fix so this theme can be used on 1.8? Admins on here were saying it would be updated over 4-5 years ago. What happened?

Forget about the old themes and go and browse for a theme which has been created for myBB 1.8.
Honestly it was forgotten and fell by the wayside. I will attempt to change that soon, but no promises.
