You're looking at a 2016 release of 2.0 then.

EDIT: building on slim would be very interesting, seeing as the dev is now building 2.0 in the develop branch, that way it's not really using a framework like some people did not like the idea of but you still have a nice base to work on.
If you look at one of my posts not too long ago, you'll see why. Basically, they like to change the framework too much. It's now on version 3 (and it's still quite a new-ish framework) and version 4 is coming soon. Each version change has been a major change.

Or creating the best framework for forum software that will be used by all future forum projects.

That's ambitious. I'd much rather use a micro or component framework to build something we need from things people have already created.
