You still have to sort through your CSS and remove what you aren't using. You'll have to do that for any pages that have useful new things.
That's irrelevant. If you start working on it off 1.6, you'll have to update your theme to use jQuery, CSS buttons, CSS sprites and a decent amount of templates and style changes. Eric made a good suggestion. Start planning now and execute the idea when 1.8 has been released. It makes a lot of sense if you ask me. Since 1.8 is kind of an image refresh for MyBB it would be nice to have an awesome framework for new developers to work with.
Considering some of the changes it's quite a bit of change on the structure that we have at the moment, yes a lot of the themes now do have CSS buttons and sprites but with this new build, everything would be a bit more simplified so if I recall correctly, the way we implement these kind of things going from template to template to edit one line to make them CSS will be much more simplified (if I gathered correctly). So it is a sort of big change, and as Fábio said, the Jquery alone will make you update a lot of the themes for 1.6 almost completely.

Edit: I hate you guys posting before me @:<
Well I'm just thinking out loud, none of us outside the staff really know what's gonna happen. Hope we will find out more soon.
That is brilliant, nice work.
Updated registration page code. I had forgotten to add hidden fields for thinks like PM notifications etc, so they were all turned off by default.

I haven't noticed any issues with leaving these out, but maybe I will add them back in.

You won't find any issues. Leaving them out just uses the default options for new accounts. [no subscribe; forum timezone; auto-detect DST; and default forum language]
