I'm not experienced in using the SCEditor WYSIWYG editor. Unfortunately, I will not be able to answer your question.
Sooner or later, I will update this Mod to the editor which will be used by MyBB 1.8. Maybe this will be of any help.
I've installed this plugin and looked at the settings, i then went onto my site, went onto a thread and tagged a user by doing @[username] and when i posted it, it showed up like [@username] and didn't change to their username or link to their profile. Can someone help please?

I don't use version 1.3.4 because it had bugs. I am still on 1.3.3 for the last couple of years and it's still working fine, but I have not upgraded MyBB to 1.8.x yet. What version of MyBB are you running? What version of plugin? And are the plugin settings configured (these settings should default in)?

Yes but you have to change the compatibility.
I'm using v1.3.4 of this plugin on my site and everything seems to work great except when you try to tag a larger number of users (around 5+). The plugin will still tag users in the post (with a link to their profile), but it will not generate a PM to notify them that they have been tagged.
Does anyone know how I might be able to resolve this? I've tried looking through the PHP code to see if there is a limitation on how many users can be tagged, but alas, I am not well versed in PHP.
