I want to keep it but make it more extendable. I'm not sure what the view of the other team members are.

There hasn't been much discussion about that AFAICT. It's definitely a possibility.

I understand that but won't that be more decided by the framework? And, since yii uses PDO won't all of those listed at http://www.php.net/manual/en/pdo.drivers.php be supported?
As previous discussions have mentioned, we might not _definitely_ be sticking with Yii. It depends on how fast they role out 2.0.
I also doubt we'll be using the default Yii DAO. It's all still in planning so things will change.
