The general consensus is swaying towards Laravel. A final decision will be made shortly before 1.8's public release.
I think it's a good thing that the team is finally moving on to a new generation of this forum software. It would be a great thing to start with fresh code, as you guys know now what you pretty much need as core features already.

Why not just stick with vanilla PHP, as opposed to adding another overhead to your code base? I think frameworks are cool, and they do make tasks easier, but they also add that fun, robust, and heavy overhead to any project.

We're researching our options and we'll choose one which meets our standards and needs. We could develop our own framework, but we'd likely end up with a similar overhead.
But, mybb already does framework/modular stuff anyway.
It handles templates, mods, languages. While I agree with what you're saying not all frameworks are huge and have tones of over head. I mean just look at some CSS/JS frameworks for example. Like bootstrap is huge (overkill imo for a framework) but amazium imo provides enough to be a great tool while not basically designing the site for you.
