1.8 will happen.
2.0, on the other hand, is not a thing yet. There are mockups and discussions, but that's it. When 1.8 is gold, we'll shift focus to 2.0 and actually begin working on it.
I like to think 2.0 will attract a lot of new developers. There are not many PHP developers interested in working on legacy code like 1.x. But 2.0 will be a modern PHP developer's wet dream.

So long as it's executed properly from the start. Falling into common pitfalls such as having fat controllers might well push developers away.
Generally though, 2.0 should be a much nicer platform to work with. 1.6 and even 1.8 feel massively outdated.
Oh wow When will 2.0 be released?

When it's ready. It doesn't exist yet. Development will start in the near future.

Is it known now what framework will be used for 2.0? I'm quite curious but I couldn't find it anywhere. Sorry if it is written somewhere and I missed it

It's very likely to be Laravel.

hmm but will users have to run composer to install it? or their will a web based installer, i wonder how will you manage the installation process for framework like laravel, it's a little pain to achieve "You have arrived"

for many users. and also many shared hostings don't offer higher version of php that laravel needs. and yes will it be laravel 4.2 or the beta 5 ? and BTW it's really soooo goood framework i've ever used. maybe i can help a lot if i could be a part of team in mybb 2.0

There will be a web installer, and we're using (the now stable) Laravel 5.

oh it wasn't before... that's really good to have mybb running on laravel which is fast growing framework. i think you guys should develop something like discourse. can i be a part of core team to help with mybb 2.0 ?
Groupleaders should have the possibility to make someone else a groupleader.
