Plus, if it was more of an open beta test, and there was a place to file bugs (like a subforum or a bug tracker), most users wouldn't use it (at least the non-technical ones).

I do think that we all will get to see 1.4 around the end of February.

I'd say around 20th February. I do a lot of beta testing but Ill wait

astrologically anything between 27th Jan and 19th Feb is not a good time to release it

I'm 99% certain they're going to release it sometime in February mainly because of the PHP compatibility issues.

I have feeling I'm going to be scolded but will they be Release Candidates? or will go straight to final release after the beta testing?

myBB 1.4 will be released January 27th at 11AM Eastern Pacific Time. I'm from the future.

based on previous release offerings, i would assume it was just released... i could be wrong, but i wouldn't count on my doubtness

So far, only MyBB Gold[1.0] had RC(or was it PR??)...there wasn't any for 1.2
