The button in the last screenshot was an (old) image. I've just started tackling the thread listing - it's a CSS button in this screenshot (the rest of the page is a mess):

I actually liked this one better, the third revision looks like a tad too integrated like it's suppose to be of use to the user. Of course, if user/ad manipulation is your goal then the third revision would be the way to go.

I don't call that manipulation, I call that effective ad placement.

I call it "Not making something look out-of-place". There are many more manipulative ways/sites than this.
Yeah, that's pretty clearly an advertisement. Would be hard to call manipulation on this.
I'm not saying manipulation (or effective ad placement) is a bad thing, but I personally feel that the second revision looks better.
Definitely prefer the newest one. If a user can't tell that it's an ad, then I suppose they have bigger problems than misclicks. It suits the design more while still easily being distinguished as an advertisement.
I'll see about posting something new here soon with a new theme I'm developing on localhost. Of course I have to use some of Brad's ideas [because awesome], but I'll of course make them unique and not directly copy things.
Regarding the ad...I think it's pretty clear it's an ad. It's also the only ad on the page and it's pretty simple at that. The third (current) revision is the design I'll be sticking with.
I've updated the thread listing quite a bit, adding in first/last post avatars and removing post icons:

Not sure I like the idea of both first AND last post avatars. Seems like avatars for avatars sake. I'd choose on or the other personally.
I also feel like Euan T. But that said, I don't know which one I would keep.

Maybe the last post avatars.
